Vaginal Dryness and Pain

Menopause, or the loss of a woman’s menstrual period, can result in a variety of symptoms. We very often hear about hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.  What we hear significantly less about is vaginal dryness and pain.

As a woman’s hormone levels shift with age and subsequently menopause occurs, some women may find reduced lubrication during sexual activity.  This reduced lubrication can lead to pain with sexual activity and sometimes bleeding. Only 25% of women who experience these symptoms actually seek treatment for the condition.

Vaginal dryness can include pain, irritation and burning or dryness during intercourse, bleeding or spotting after sex, and painful pap smears.

Vaginal dryness is not an unusual condition. Since our society of so sensitive to the word “vagina,” many postmenopausal women don’t feel comfortable bringing up this topic.  We often pussyfoot around the issue, having been taught to use a variety of euphemisms for our “nether regions.”

If menopause is causing you vaginal dryness and pain, you may be interested in learning more about a 7-day research study being conducted by Dr. Robert Spitz in on Montauk Avenue in  New London at CCRstudies.  The study is comparing an investigational vaginal cream to an already marketed (FDA-approved) vaginal cream.  Qualified participants must be women between the ages of 30 and 75 who no longer menstruate monthly, and are willing to use the study product.  There are 3 office visits over the course of 7-days.  Study volunteers may receive a mammogram or ultrasound as part of the study, as well as compensation for time and travel.
